A paramedic has been struck off for having sex with a vulnerable patient after answering a 999 call at her home. Trevor Finnerty was removed from the register during a Health and Care Professions Tribunal Service (HCPTS) hearing into his actions.

The ex West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS) employee had a 30 year-long career in the emergency services. But it was heard he had later texted her, saying: ‘this is u friendly ambulance service, how was u service’.

At the hearing, the panel was told that the patient had ‘serious mental health issues’ and on the night of the incident, Finnerty was working alone on a rapid response vehicle. In a statement to police Mr Finnerty said the woman had invited him in to her bedroom during his visit. However, he also described the encounter to police as ‘quite erotic’.

In his written submission, he said that he regards himself as the primary victim of the incident. The panel found him unfit to practice and struck him off the register with immediate effect.

In a statement, Panel Chair Helen Carter-Shaw, said: ‘Whilst acknowledging his actions were wrong, the registrant continues to blame others, avoid personal responsibility and offers no thought as to the damage his actions might cause to the reputation of, and public trust and confidence in, his profession. He said he had refused but she then ‘threatened to tell his boss that he had done it anyway’, so he agreed to her demands ‘out of fear’ (Picture: Facebook) ‘It was beyond dispute that the registrant’s conduct in engaging in sexual activity with a patient breached proper standards of conduct and that it brought his profession into disrepute.’ WMAS said that the organisation had carried out their own investigations and, had he not resigned, he would have been dismissed following their own investigations.
