According to UOL Esporte, the prospects of David Luiz staying at Chelsea beyond this season are looking flimsier by the day. The 31-year-old, who only has six months left on the three-year contract he signed upon his return to Stamford Bridge in 2016, has recently rejected a one-year contract extension offer from the Blues.
Previous reports had indicated that David Luiz wanted a longer-term offer than the standard one year given to players over 30, but he’s apparently willing to sign a short-term contract as long as the financial compensation is increased accordingly. But according to the report, that was not the case.
To make matters worse, Chelsea’s relationship with David Luiz’s agent, Kia Joorabchian, has worsened in recent times, thanks to Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia’s reservations about the fees demanded by (in addition to unspecified “other disputes” with) the superagent who also represents Chelsea players Kenedy, Lucas Piazon, Matt Miazga and Nathan. (Ed. note: that of course isn’t necessarily a bad thing and does raise questions about who’s holding true power in this situation. Is David Luiz receiving good advice?)
While other teams are unlikely to match Chelsea’s financial terms, improved or not, David Luiz could probably get longer term deals with other clubs — UOL name Monaco (who just gave 3.5 years to Cesc Fabregas) and Benfica (though they were reportedly ruled out not too long ago).
David has been a key cog in Sarri’s Chelsea, and showcased his skills and vision with the no-look defence-splitting pass to Pedro to open the scoring against Newcastle on Saturday. It was just the latest through ball from the defender, a category in which he dominates the rest of the league.

Despite his importance, Chelsea are unlikely to budge in their negotiating position. Age, the club’s contractual policy and a successor (not quite the same level yet, but should get there) waiting in the wings, Andreas Christensen, are all factors at that disincentivize Chelsea from offering the terms, financial or otherwise, that David Luiz is said to be seeking.
