Parents could be hit by fines of £1,000 if they take a child out of school during term time.
A north-west primary school has reportedly sent home warning letters to parents detailing the planned new move by a council.

According to the Sunday Times , Lancashire County Council is testing a new financial punitive scheme.

It's reported that penalty fine notices of £1,000 per child, per parent could be issued should a child be absent from the classroom during school time.

It means that in a two-parent, two-child family, each parent would be fined £1,000 per child - equating to £4,000 in total.

In a letter sent to parents seen by the newspaper Sara Richardson, headteacher at Balladen Community Primary School in Rawtenstall, Rossendale, is reported as saying: "Lancashire county council is currently trialling a new system for dealing with unauthorised holidays and breaks during term time.

"This involves an increase in the financial penalty to parents of up to £1,000 per parent per child.

"This system is still at the pilot stage but please be aware this may come into effect at any stage."

Currently families in the county face fixed penalty notices of £120 per child, according to the newspaper, which claimed more term-time holiday penalty notices have been issued in Lancashire than any other area in the country.

The council issued 7,575 fines last year, up 6,876 in 2016-17 - giving the impression that the current fining system as not acting as enough of a deterrent to parents.
