Michael Carrick's former and current teammates will turn out
for the Manchester United midfielder's testimonial at Old Trafford on Sunday -
but one of them is unable to play.
Anderson is returning to United two-and-a-half years after
he was sold by Louis van Gaal yet is unable to participate in the game against
an All-Stars line-up managed by Harry Redknapp.
United said the Internacional midfielder 'will play no part
in Sunday’s game due to injury, but will be in attendance at Old Trafford'.
Anderson's fitness was ridiculed by United supporters during his
seven-and-a-half years with the club but the Brazilian remains fondly
remembered by some fans.
Wayne Rooney is the only current teammate of Carrick's who
is set to feature in the game. Rooney holidayed in Barbados recently and is
free to play after he was omitted from the England squad by Gareth Southgate.
Edwin van der Sar is the only goalkeeper named in the squad
and a number of United defensive greats will play in front of him. Gary
Neville, Wes Brown, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra and Mikael
Silvestre all won the Champions League during their time at the club.
Midfield legends Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs have been
selected, while Ji-Sung Park and Darren Fletcher are also expected to play.
Dimitar Berbatov - signed after United's Premier League and Champions League
double in 2008 - will be able to play at his preferred pace.
Injury-prone duo Louis Saha and Owen Hargreaves are due to
test out their durability as well. Saha had to withdraw early during a Legends'
match against Bayern Munich at Old Trafford two years ago.
Redknapp's squad includes Shay Given, former United defender
Phil Neville, Michel Salgado, Jamie Carragher, John Terry, Eric Abidal, Joan
Capdevila, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Marcos Senna, Gaizka Mendieta,
Clarence Seedorf, Damien Duff, Richard Garcia, ex-United striker Michael Owen,
Robbie Keane and Eidur Gudjohnsen.
Sir Alex Ferguson, who will manage United again on Sunday,
made attempts to sign Terry, Senna and Duff during his United tenure. He also
spoke admiringly about Gerrard and Lampard.
The notable absentees from Carrick's squad who were selected
in United's 2008 Champions League final 18 are Cristiano Ronaldo, Carlos Tevez,
Nani, John O'Shea and Tomasz Kuszczak.
