The amount of times celebrities have been mommy-shamed this summer alone is pretty ridiculous. Just last week the Internet crucified Ciara after she posted a video of her family tobogganing down the Great Wall of China.
Right before that was Pink, whose only offense was cooking with her two kids in the kitchen. And the list continues: Chrissy Teigen, Jessica Simpson, Amanda Stanton—all of these women have recently dealt with people giving unsolicited opinions about their parenting skills. It's not cool. (In fact, according to science, it's really not cool.) Unfortunately, though, the anonymity of the Internet makes it very easy to take shots with no repercussions.
And Megan Fox is the latest celebrity mom in the crossfire. On Monday (July 31) the actress posted a very cute collage of her family to Instagram, and it included a photo of her son (Noah) wearing a Frozen-themed dress. To be clear, this isn't a big deal at all: It's actually amazing Fox is letting her son express himself however he pleases—constricting gender norms, be damned. The concept of gender fluidity isn't anything new; many parents have the same mindset that Fox does and give their children freedom to define who they are on their own terms.
But, of course, some of Fox's Instagram followers had nasty things to say about this. “No values. No morals. Promoting gay perversion. Destruction of traditional gender roles lead to a totalitarian society granting government officials more power," one user commented. Someone else quipped, "It is not okay for a boy to walk around in their mother's heels. Just like it's NOT okay for a child to be disrespectful. So, again that's when it's the parent's job to instruct the child in the RIGHT way.”
It should go without saying, but these comments are complete rubbish. Gender is fluid, and there is no "right" or "wrong" way to present yourself. The only time trouble arises is when people are forced to be something they're not.
Thankfully, many of Fox's followers echoed this. “Megan's boys look just perfect. Leave her alone,” a user replied. "live let live man! kid is happy? that all it matters...everyone is ok with it,” another person wrote.
