Arsene Wenger admits Arsenal cannot even begin to think about catching Premier League leaders Manchester City after falling to a costly defeat at Watford.
Tom Cleverley’s injury-time winner completed a sensational comeback win for the hosts, who had trailed to Per Mertesacker’s first half opener. Arsenal have taken just one point from four Premier League games away from home so far this season, and already trail Pep Guardiola’s free scoring pacesetters by nine points.
Asked about the possibility of hauling in City, Wenger said: ‘It will be difficult of course I think at the moment we are not looking too much at City, we are looking at ourselves. ‘We have to bounce back from that disappointment today because we look like we can make results when we play our game, like we did in the first half. But we need to be at that level for 90 minutes.’
Arsenal had looked set for a comfortable victory, but succumbed to a late Watford bombardment and Wenger claimed the recent international break played a part in his side’s collapse. ‘It is yes,’ said Wenger on the difficulties of playing so soon after a fortnight off. ‘But if you look at the game today, a bit more killer instinct in front of goal and we would have won the game. That’s where we are guilty. ‘After that the decision on the penalty we can’t have an impact on. Not everybody is at the same level physically for sure, I feel despite that we should have won the game.
